The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) has launched efforts to identify and promote Maryland County’s cultural and historical attractions, holding a strategic meeting with County Superintendent Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. as part of a nationwide tourism assessment mission.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, brought together officials of the Liberia National Tourism Authority and the Maryland County Administration to discuss opportunities for developing the county into one of Liberia’s leading cultural and tourism destinations.
Speaking on behalf of the LNTA delegation, the Authority’s Deputy Director General said the team’s visit was intended to identify, document, and assess cultural, historical, and tourism sites with the potential to attract both domestic and international visitors.
He explained that the assessment forms part of the Authority’s broader strategy to preserve Liberia’s cultural heritage while promoting tourism as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and community development.
Welcoming the delegation, Superintendent Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. described Maryland County as one of Liberia’s most culturally diverse and historically significant counties, noting that it possesses numerous tourism assets that remain largely untapped.
According to Superintendent Toe, the county is home to several important cultural and historical landmarks that can contribute significantly to Liberia’s tourism sector if properly developed and promoted.
He praised the LNTA for selecting Maryland County as part of its assessment, saying the visit provides an important opportunity to showcase the county’s rich heritage to the rest of the country and the world.
The Superintendent also highlighted ongoing plans to commemorate Maryland County’s unique history as “Maryland in Africa” through an Independence Day celebration. He said the event is intended not only to preserve the county’s historical identity but also to promote cultural heritage, tourism, peace, unity, and reconciliation among Marylanders living both in Liberia and abroad.
Responding to the Superintendent’s remarks, the Liberia National Tourism Authority reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Maryland County Administration to strengthen tourism development in the county.
The Authority pledged to use its national platform to promote the county’s cultural attractions and expressed its readiness to support the planned “Maryland in Africa” celebration, with the goal of increasing public awareness and attracting more visitors to the county.
The visit marks another step in the LNTA’s ongoing efforts to identify and develop Liberia’s tourism potential while encouraging counties to preserve and promote their unique cultural identities as part of the country’s national development agenda.
