The Liberia National Police (LNP) has issued a strong warning against the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, badges, and other official identifiers, cautioning that such actions violate Liberian law and could result in criminal prosecution.
In a statement released Thursday, the police said it has observed several instances of individuals using police-related attire and symbols without authorization, including in online content, public events, and other public displays.
According to the LNP, police uniforms and insignia are official symbols of lawful authority and public trust. Authorities warned that their unauthorized use can create confusion among citizens, undermine confidence in law enforcement institutions, and potentially facilitate criminal activities such as police impersonation.
The police further emphasized that Liberian law strictly regulates the use of official police attire and identifiers. Citing Section 22.98 of the Liberia National Police Act and Regulations, the LNP noted that no individual may wear, display, assume, or use a police uniform, badge, insignia, designation, or appearance without written authorization from the Inspector General of Police.
The law also prohibits any person from falsely presenting themselves as a member of the Liberia National Police or claiming police authority without legal authorization.
Authorities warned that individuals who engage in police impersonation not only violate the law but also pose significant risks to public safety and the credibility of law enforcement operations.
“The unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, badges, or related police identifiers constitutes a violation of Liberian law and may result in criminal liability,” the statement noted.
The LNP announced that it will investigate all credible reports involving the unlawful use of police uniforms, badges, insignia, or related police accoutrements and will take appropriate legal action where sufficient evidence exists.
The warning was directed particularly at content creators, entertainers, event organizers, businesses, and members of the public who may use police-related attire or symbols without obtaining the required authorization from the Inspector General of Police.
The police urged citizens to exercise caution and refrain from any unauthorized use of official police identifiers, regardless of the intended purpose.
Additionally, members of the public have been encouraged to report suspected cases of police impersonation or unauthorized use of police uniforms and insignia to the nearest police station or through official Liberia National Police reporting channels.
The Liberia National Police reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public trust, preserving the integrity of the institution, and ensuring compliance with the laws of the Republic of Liberia.
The latest warning comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen professionalism within the security sector and prevent activities that could undermine public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
