Residents of New Kru Town and Hoffman Station communities in Harper District #1, Maryland County, have expressed mixed reactions to a newly constructed bridge dedicated by Maryland County District #1 Representative Hon. P. Mike Jurry.
While acknowledging the Representative’s efforts to address infrastructure challenges in the district, some residents have questioned whether the reported US$10,000 cost of the bridge reflects the quality, size, and overall condition of the structure.
The concerns were raised during a media tour in Harper District #1 on August 8, 2026, following the recent dedication of the bridge linking New Kru Town and Hoffman Station communities.
The bridge, constructed at a reported cost of US$10,000, is intended to improve movement between the two communities and ease transportation challenges faced by residents, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
However, some residents said the amount reportedly spent on the project appears high when compared with the physical condition and construction quality of the bridge.
Joseph C. Jasper, a resident of New Kru Town, expressed disappointment over the reported cost, while stressing that he recognized the Representative’s effort to provide infrastructure for residents.
Jasper said the bridge is important to the communities because it provides a connection between New Kru Town and Hoffman Station, but argued that the structure should reflect the amount reportedly invested in its construction.
He suggested that greater attention should be given to transparency and value for money when public officials undertake community development projects.
Another resident of Hoffman Station, who requested anonymity, also questioned the cost of the project.
She said the community appreciates the bridge because it addresses a longstanding transportation need, but added that residents expected a structure that would better correspond with a US$10,000 investment.
The concerns come amid growing calls from citizens for greater transparency in the implementation of community-based development projects, particularly where public or community resources are involved.
Despite the criticism, residents acknowledged that the bridge is providing an important link between the two communities. They noted that the project could contribute to easier movement of people, goods and services between New Kru Town and Hoffman Station.
The bridge is also expected to become particularly important during the rainy season, when poor road conditions and damaged crossings can make movement difficult for residents.
Rep. P. Mike Jurry has in recent times undertaken several development initiatives in Maryland County District #1, with infrastructure being among the areas receiving attention.
The US$10,000 bridge was recently dedicated as part of efforts to improve local infrastructure and connectivity within Harper.
While some residents have welcomed the project, the questions surrounding its reported cost have created a debate over whether the investment corresponds with the actual quality and scope of the work.
Residents are therefore calling for greater transparency in the costing and implementation of future development projects, saying communities deserve infrastructure that is durable, useful, and commensurate with the resources allocated.
As the debate continues, residents appear united on one point: the need for improved infrastructure in Harper District #1, while differing over whether the US$10,000 reportedly spent on the New Kru Town-Hoffman Station bridge represents value for money.
